BEING FEMME IN 2022

The overturn of Roe V Wade sent an already exhausted femme identifying population into a state of fury, grief and malaise. Women were speaking out in outrage and it quickly became clear to me that the expressions I was witnessing deserved to be represented, amplified and exalted as ART and also as history/herstory. I desired to create and share representations of femme expression that subverted the norm of what being a “good woman” is supposed to look like in our society. I wanted to create mirrors through which the viewer could see and touch places inside of themselves that were tender.

In this photo series I explore and archive the way that societal events between 2020 and 2022 have manifested themselves in the bodies of women in the United States. The photo sessions became brave containers where subjects could safely express the complex and overlapping emotional landscapes that have developed over the last 2 and a half years. In this way, this project has served both as an art piece and a healing process. I am honored to have been able to capture the humans in these images at a vulnerable time in history and my undying gratitude and respect goes out to each of them.

All art is mixed media on reclaimed wood using acrylic paints, nails, tissue paper, spray paint, wax and glue.
